BAH, not OHA
Even though Hawaiʻi counts as OCONUS, housing is paid as Basic Allowance for Housing, a flat monthly amount by rank and dependency status. If you spend less than your BAH, you keep the difference.
PCS to Oʻahu: the complete guide
Allowances, VA loans, pets, cars, schools, and which neighborhoods fit your base. Everything military families ask us, in one place, from a local team that does this every week.
Hawaiʻi is an OCONUS move with stateside rules for some things and island rules for others. Starting early is the single biggest stress saver, especially if you have pets.
Pets change everything. To skip Hawaiʻi's 120-day quarantine, your dog or cat needs a rabies blood test at least 120 days before arrival. If you have pets, start that the week you get orders.
Book your pet's rabies blood test, call your TMO, and schedule a free call with us to talk budget, BAH, and whether to rent or buy.
A pre-approval tells you exactly what you can buy. We'll connect you with lenders who close VA loans on Oʻahu every month.
Live video tours, neighborhood drive-throughs, and honest commute advice for your base.
Digital signing and mobile notaries mean you can close before you land, so your home is ready when you are.
Use TLA while you wait on household goods, pick up your car at the processing center, and welcome home.
The short version: Hawaiʻi is a BAH location (not OHA), and you'll usually get Cost of Living Allowance on top because island life costs more.
Even though Hawaiʻi counts as OCONUS, housing is paid as Basic Allowance for Housing, a flat monthly amount by rank and dependency status. If you spend less than your BAH, you keep the difference.
Oʻahu duty stations receive OCONUS Cost of Living Allowance to offset higher prices for groceries, gas, and goods shipped to the islands. It's non-taxable and depends on rank, years of service, and dependents. The index is adjusted several times a year.
Temporary Lodging Allowance helps cover a hotel or short-term rental while you house hunt or wait for household goods. It's authorized in blocks and reviewed, so keep receipts and check in with finance early.

The VA loan is one of the best benefits you've earned, and it works especially well in a high-cost market like Hawaiʻi.
We'll also flag the Oʻahu-specific details that trip people up, like condo approvals and leasehold land, before you fall in love with a listing.
Oʻahu traffic is real. Choosing a neighborhood near your gate can give you back hours every week. Here's which branch is where, and the neighborhoods our military clients usually look at. Tap any neighborhood to see homes for sale there.
